Best Free Tools for Email Marketing

February 10, 2023 by Anna Norriss

If email marketing is on your radar, then you’re in the right place! In this article, we’ll look at the best free tools for email marketing to help you get started and achieve success.

Email marketing is a powerful tool for reaching and engaging your target audience. There’s a lot of great platforms out there and tools that can help you stay consistent with your email marketing.

For so many businesses it can seem hard to get started – but it doesn’t need to be! Fortunately, there are many free tools for email marketing available to boost your business without breaking the bank.

Why email marketing is important for business

Email marketing is essential to help your business grow and thrive. The main aim of email marketing is to engage and nurture your subscribers. You can read more about the benefits of email marketing here. Some key benefits of email marketing are:

Increases brand awareness

Improves customer retention

Drives sales in your business

Email marketing platforms

There are a lot of email marketing platforms available. So how do you know which one to use?

Sometimes the choice can seem overwhelming!

Most email service providers offer a free account, up to a certain number of subscribers or free for a trial period. This allows you to create an account and start building your list without any additional costs to start with.

Smaller businesses should probably stay away from the more complex email marketing software options like Hubspot. You likely don’t need a full CRM system straight away.

Here are some of the easiest email marketing platforms for small and medium businesses:

MailerLite

Active Campaign

Convertkit

Flodesk

When choosing an email marketing platform, it’s important to consider the specific needs and the size of your business. There are pros and cons for all the platforms. Most companies choose a provider based on cost and ease of use.

It is also important to check the reporting and analytics the platform provide to ensure you can track the results you need. Top email marketing metrics to track.

What’s the best emailing software?

My preferred email marketing platform is MailerLite. In fact, I’m a certified MailerLite Expert.

I find Mailerlite very easy for my clients. The interface is simple to navigate with the drag and drop email templates and landing pages. The platform is simple enough for even the biggest technophobe to use!

Contacts can be segmented by groups so it’s easy to send more targeted emails to specific people. And the segmentation process is much easier to understand in MailerLite than Mailchimp for example. I was once told by a Mailchimp help desk person, that “if I had a degree in maths it would help me understand their segmentation process.” Ummmm ok! This is just one of the many reasons why I don’t recommend Mailchimp to my clients.

No matter which email marketing platform you choose, the key to  email marketing success is consistency. The aim is to send high-quality content that resonates with your target audience.

Best tools for email marketing

Is consistency one of your biggest struggles when it comes to email marketing?

You’re not alone!

Consistency is one of the biggest challenges my clients struggle with when we started working together. Knowing what to write and scheduling emails regularly can be challenging.

There are lots of free tools for email marketing and supporting tools to help get you started. You need:

  • Somewhere to research ideas
  • Somewhere to organise your ideas
  • A program to write your emails
  • A program to send your emails

Here are some of the best tools for email marketing to help reduce the overwhelm of mail marketing.

Answer the Public is a great site for ideas about what content to create. It shows you what people have been searching. Understanding what’s in demand can help you pinpoint a topic to talk about in your marketing. It’s a great starting point for inspiration and allows you to see current trends.

Trello is free (up to 10 boards) and VERY simple to start using. It’s a visual tool that helps you organise your workflows and ideas. The calendar view allows you to easily see that what you’ve planned includes a variety of topics and content pillars.

There are other programs that offer similar style organisation like Asana and Clickup to name a few. But these are more complex programs and have a bigger learning curve. The simplicity of Trello means you can start using it with ease, today.

I recommend writing your emails in Google Docs rather than straight into your email service provider. It’s easier and more reliable to check grammar and spelling in Google Docs and is also accessible across multiple devices so you can drop notes in even if you’re away from your desk. You will then create a bank of content that’s easy to refer to later.

Steps to start an email list

I work with a lot of clients who have been put off email marketing due to the tech side of things being too complicated. They are overwhelmed and not sure where to start – so they never do! And email marketing just sits on their to-do list indefinitely.

To get started you need to:

  • Select an email service provider
  • Create a sign up landing page
  • Write a basic welcome email

Yes, it can be that simple!

As you get more confident, you can add a lead generator and start working on an email marketing strategy.
