Freebies That Actually Work to Grow Your Email List

August 20, 2025 by Anna Norriss

(And Why Some Old Tactics Don’t Cut It Anymore)

Once upon a time, a 10% discount code or a generic “how-to” guide was enough to get people onto your email list.

Not anymore I’m afraid.

Today’s audience is far savvier. They’ve been around the block, downloaded their fair share of freebies, and frankly, they can spot a low-effort lead magnet from a mile away.

If you’re still relying on those old tactics, you’ve probably noticed the results aren’t what they used to be. Sign-ups are sluggish, people don’t engage with your content, and worst of all, you’re not building the kind of connection that actually leads to sales.

So, what happened? And more importantly, what’s working now? Let’s dive in.

Why Old Lead Generation Tactics Are Failing

Lead generation has evolved. What worked five or even three years ago doesn’t necessarily work today.

Discount codes: easy but lazy

Let’s start with the obvious one. Offering a discount code can be effective in the short term, especially for product-based businesses. But let’s be honest. It’s expected. Every retailer does it.

If you’re a service provider, it’s even less appealing. Offering 10% off a coaching session or consulting package doesn’t scream value. It screams “I don’t know what else to offer.”

Discounts can get people on your list, but they don’t build loyalty. They attract bargain-hunters, not your ideal clients who value your expertise.

Generic eBooks and how-to guides

Not so long ago, the free “Ultimate Guide to [Insert Topic Here]” was a lead generation staple. But the internet is now flooded with them. Many of these are nothing more than AI-generated fluff.

And people can tell.

If your freebie feels like something they could have Googled (or worse, something ChatGPT spat out in 30 seconds), they’ll assume the rest of your content, including what they might pay for, is equally low effort.

One-size-fits-all checklists

A generic “social media checklist” or “business launch plan” might seem useful, but without context or personalisation, it rarely gets used. People want solutions tailored to them, not a vague list of tasks that could apply to anyone.

These freebies don’t just fail to convert. They could actively harm your brand.

The Risk of a Bad Lead Magnet

Here’s something not enough people say out loud.

A bad freebie can do more damage than no freebie at all.

Think about it. If someone downloads your resource and it’s uninspiring, overwhelming or completely irrelevant to their needs, what impression does that leave?

They’re unlikely to engage with your emails. They’re unlikely to buy from you. And worst of all, they may write you off entirely.

In other words, if your freebie sucks, people assume your paid stuff probably does too.

That might sound harsh, but it’s true.

What Audiences Want in 2025

So, if discount codes and cookie-cutter PDFs aren’t cutting it, what do people actually want?

The short answer is value.

But what is value in today’s landscape:

Actionable, quick wins

Nobody wants to download a 40-page guide they’ll never read. Your audience wants solutions they can implement today. The faster they see a win, the more likely they are to trust you and keep engaging.

Personalised, relevant content

A one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t cut it anymore. People are far more likely to exchange their email for something that feels like it was created specifically for them, whether that’s tailored quiz results, a niche template or a resource that solves a problem unique to their situation.

Human-led insights (not just AI)

AI has made it easier than ever to produce content. But that’s also the problem. The internet is awash with bland, recycled information.

Your audience wants you. Your expertise. Your take. Your hard-earned insights. They want to feel like they’re getting access to something real, not something they could have generated themselves in ChatGPT.

Why Just “Good Enough” Isn’t Enough

A lead magnet isn’t just a quick freebie. It’s often the very first impression someone has of your business.

If your best effort is a mediocre, and frankly forgettable, PDF or a tired “10% off” code, you’re telling your audience that mediocrity is your standard.

And that’s not what gets people to stick around, open your emails or invest in your services.

So, What’s Working Now?

There’s good news! Lead generation isn’t dead. It’s just changed.

People are still signing up for email lists. They’re still downloading freebies. But they’re much more selective. They want freebies that feel fresh, valuable and tailored to them.

You can grab my full guide of what freebies are working here.

And here’s a quick peek at what’s performing well for service-based businesses right now.

  • Interactive experiences: Quizzes and assessments that help people learn something about themselves and make your follow-up emails more targeted.
  • Micro-trainings: Bite-sized tutorials that solve a specific problem in 10 minutes or less.
  • Done-for-you tools: Templates, swipe files, or scripts that save people time and get them into action quickly.

Notice a theme? These are designed to deliver real value. They’re purposeful, actionable and will make your audience feel like they’ve gained something genuinely useful.

Because growing your list shouldn’t feel like guesswork. And it definitely shouldn’t feel like giving away discounts just to get noticed.

Final Thoughts

Lead generation in 2025 isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing better.

If you can create a freebie that feels valuable, personal and genuinely helpful, you get more sign-ups and build trust. And that trust is what turns subscribers into clients.

So ditch the tired tactics. Leave the generic AI guides behind. And focus on creating something your audience will actually thank you for.
